Many Swedish district heating networks still use PR-KIK valves from the Danish manufacturer Brdr. Christensen, produced between 1970 and 1992. Thanks to their robust construction, many of these valves are still fully operational after more than 30 years.
But in many cases, it is not the valve that is the problem – it is the actuator and gearbox
After many years of operation, gearboxes and actuators begin to reach the end of their service life, while spare parts can be difficult or impossible to source. Replacing the entire valve can then be a costly and time-consuming solution – particularly in a district heating network where a shutdown can affect heat supply to hundreds or even thousands of end customers.
For Karlstads Energi, we modernized two existing PR-KIK valves by replacing the old gearboxes and actuators with a modern AUMA solution. Thanks to custom-engineered mounting components, the existing valves could be retained and given a new lease of life.
